Internship Overview
As a summer intern with Rockbridge Outdoors, hosted by Lexington and Rockbridge Area Tourism, you will have the opportunity to contribute to the enhancement of outdoor recreation resources in the county. As a Trails Documentation Intern, you will play a vital role in improving visitor experiences by creating comprehensive and engaging trail descriptions for three (3) websites: Rockbridge Outdoors website (Example), Visitors Center’s "Explore" page (Example), and Park Rx America Nature Prescription Map (Example). Through this opportunity, you will learn about the outdoor areas of Rockbridge County, the importance of conservation, and its impact on the community and visitors. The impact of this work includes the expansion of knowledge and opportunities for visitors, support of safety and preparation, and growth of outdoor recreation. Key responsibilities will include:
- Conduct on-site visits to document local trails.
- Gather and organize essential information, including:
- Detailed trail descriptions (difficulty, key features, markers and signage, etc.)
- Clear and concise walking directions
- Safety tips and recommendations
- High-quality photos and videos showcasing trail scenery and points of interest
- Write up trail reports and publish them on the Rockbridge Outdoors website, the Visitor Center’s “Explore” map, and the Park Rx America Nature Prescription Map.
- Assist with other projects related to outdoor recreation in Rockbridge County as needed.
Qualification
Essential Skills: Experience and confidence in hiking in various conditions and familiarity with hiking safety protocols. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Strong attention to detail and organizational skills. Ability to work independently and in a team. Possess a valid driver’s license and reliable transportation. A basic knowledge of GPS and mapping applications.
Desired Skills: Experience with photography and videography (high-quality camera or smartphone), Interest in environmental science or outdoor recreation, and confidence in speaking with others.
Internship Structure
This internship is part of the Office of Community-Based Learning’s (CBL) internship program. As an intern, you will receive ongoing support from CBL staff and your on-site supervisor. You will also participate in weekly cohort meetings for training and reflection.
Although this is an unpaid internship, students are encouraged to apply for summer funding through the Career and Professional Development Office (applications typically due winter term) and the Johnson Opportunity Grant (applications due January or March). Please note that funding is limited and not guaranteed. Additional need-based funding is available through the Community-Based Learning office upon request.
